2008 Hy-Vee ITU Triathlon: Henning defends title; Snowsill wins women’s race.
Rasmus Henning finished first in 2007 and came back to defend his title this year, banking another $200,000. Emma Snowsill of Australia, who did not finish the 2007 race, was the women’s top finisher.
Coming in second in the men’s race was Bevan Docherty of New Zealand; in third was Greg Bennett of Austalia. The women’s second place finisher was Emma Moffatt of Australia; in third was Helen Tucker of Great Britain. The top American man was Hunter Kemper, the top American woman was Laura Bennett, who was the 2007 Hy-Vee Triathlon winner.
The USA Olympic triathlon team was also presented for the first time following the Hy-Vee ITU Triathlon as Kemper and Sarah Haskins secured the last two spots on the team. Joining Kemper and Haskins on the Olympic team are Jarrod Shoemaker, Matt Reed, Laura Bennett and Julie Swail Ertel.
Weather conditions threatened to turn the 2008 Hy-Vee ITU Triathlon into a duathlon but thanks to a lot of sun, and some quick planning and adjusting from Hy-Vee and its many volunteers, the venue changed and allowed for some exciting swimming, biking and running.
